Seiko released their newest Astron GPS Solar timepiece and having this watch in my collection only further confirms my aspiration to travel every single part of this world. I grew up in a small but mighty family of global travelers — journeying across varying continents is rooted in my blood. My mother’s career has allowed her flee the States within a few days notice to places like Brazil, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, Dubai, et cetera. On my father’s side being a Frenchman, half my family lives in France (and, did I mention that he currently resides on a catamaran in the Fiji Islands? I mean…). Clearly I have a lot to live up to, but in the meantime, I can gather my essentials to make time zone hopping truly a timeless venture.

I’ll be honest. I’ve never been a watch person for the simple reason that my wrists are tiny in comparison to my hands, which are proportionally large considering my six-two stature (I’ll win at thumb war, hands down). Most watches with advanced hardware that drew my attention have large faces that would look flat out ridiculous if it got anywhere close to my body. But the new Astron GPS Solar is 30% smaller from older versions and my starting point size for remote consideration, which — as you can see — I’ve warmly welcomed into my style.

There’s something to be said about a watch that keeps a classic appeal with advanced technology tucked beneath its face. The Seiko Astron GPS Solar reminds me of watches my dad sported daily. He might, in fact, still sport the style. In the dawn (err, late morning?) of an age where capabilities are being expanded beyond our wildest imaginations into the smallest of contraptions and wearable technologies, it’s refreshing to see a product being pushed to the limits of what it was originally built for: telling time. That’s one less distraction from the dinner table, one less technological deterrent from trying to “unplug” or from truly seeing the world I set myself up to see. Using only the power of light, hence “Solar” — that’s no batteries required — this timepiece connects with one of the four GPS satellites orbiting the earth to identify the exact time in any time zone it’s in. No cranking or turning a crown required. That’s effortless and, being so in the name of style, is truly timeless.
