In 2008, Tim Hancock and Jannik Davidsen launched their line of moderately priced quality eyewear, Han Kjøbenhavn, which has since expanded into a full ready-to-wear collection consisting of trendy shirts, trousers, knitwear, outerwear and denim. The Danish brand is not what you’d expect coming out of Scandinavia. With heritage brands like GANT of Sweden, the rock n’ roll, biker inspired BLK DNM and high fashion contemporary brands like Henrik Vibskov from Denmark, you would expect tradition but Han Kjøbenhavn is ushering in a new era of Scandinavian fashion. The brand is what has been missing from menswear for quite some time, which is quality, versatility and most importantly, comfort. We stopped by Han Kjøbenhavn’s first New York City location on Prince Street in Nolita to chop it up with the store manager, Casper Willy, about Scandinavian style and his own style inspirations.

This interview was recorded on November 1st, 2013.

How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style is very much inspired by streetwear, specifically Danish streetwear. I always buy my clothes a little bit oversized and the bottoms a little bit tight.

Were you ever inspired by American fashion or any other fashion outside of Denmark?
Definitely. American fashion has always been really big in Scandinavia because of denim, we love denim. American brands like Levi’s have always been big in Scandinavia so I’m definitely inspired by old American movies in the 80s and early 90s.

Was there anything specific from that time period that you incorporated into your style?
Old hip hop videos from the 80s with the sweatpants, oversized tops, caps. All of the guys in the hip hop world just looked insanely cool in the 80s. If you look at music videos from the 80s now you’ll see a lot of inspiration in the styles we have in the store.

How does Han Kjøbenhavn relate to your own personal style?
I love the brand. Before I started working with the brand I was a buyer at another store and I always bought [Han Kjøbenhavn], because I always thought that the brand is so good. You have everything here. When I wear the clothes I feel really comfortable.

Are there any pieces from this season that you felt you absolutely needed?
The collection this Fall is the best collection we’ve ever done I believe. There are a lot of different fabrics and different qualities. Our jacket, the Banker, is an amazing piece. The fit is amazing and it’s lambs wool.

Are there any pieces from previous seasons that you always find yourself wearing out?
Yeah, there are sweatpants from the Han Kjøbenhavn Blue collection, which was the first apparel collection in 2009. They are indigo sweats. I bought them about 3 years ago and I bought a lot of pairs, and we have a few army shirts that are a heavier fabric that you can wear as a jacket. I have a number of those in my wardrobe too.

From how you described your personal style, it seems like this brand is the perfect fit.
It is! I may work at the store now, but back in the day when I wasn’t working here I wore a lot of Han Kjøbenhavn. The fit is amazing for my style.

But before Han Kjobenhavn, how did you used to dress?
I had a period where I wore things a little bit more tight, because that is how the fashion is in Scandinavia. Sweden especially but also in Denmark we wear a lot of tight jeans, tight black denim, tight blazer, rock n’ roll stuff. I used to do that maybe 3 or 4 years ago, but I didn’t feel as comfortable as I do now. Now I feel comfortable and get to dress more my style.
