Smoke Bombs in Small Towns

In which we experiment with colored smoke bombs...in the dead of Canadian winter.

So what if it’s -25°C? So what if the wind blows so hard that it bites you? Continue to explore, continue to try new things, continue to create. It’s too easy to let the cold steal your fun and target your positive mindset. Sometimes you just need to ‘pull the pin’ and get out there in spite of it all.

Lucky for me, I have a little locomotive engine of creativity by my side named Vanessa. When it comes time to visit her microscopic home town Rocanville, I think her boredom often drives the creativity train. Lacking proper gear but full of vinegar we trudged through the snow to the top of the whitewashed valley for the shoot. The wind was a little strong and the smoke didn’t want to hang with us (like who wouldn’t?) so our results may be a little different from what you’ve seen in other smoke filled photos. Unafraid of failure we spurred on only to find that I’m not particularly versed in combat skills and my pin pulling abilities are almost as bad as my direction following abilities. However, my flushing money down the toilet skills proved true without question.

We were happy shooting the two colors – green and blue, despite our casualty, purple because it meant warmth sooner. The staff at CN heard what we were up to and sent a train of tourists (or petroleum products?) to catch the action and perhaps score a shameless selfie. We declined and they reluctantly settled into prop status. Please enjoy these photos that Vanessa hustled so hard to capture, and don’t forget to leave your comment below!
