As a born and bred Clevelander, I love hearing about success stories from the industrial cities that dot the Midwest. Detroit’s not in the best shape, but where some may see peril, others see promise. A great article in Details last year, featured the positive changes in the region from denizens that didn’t flee the region as I did, and are determined to see a rust belt revival.
In style circles I’ve seen the name Shinola come up frequently, and the makers have made the rounds in the media, recently showing up in the New York Times. They’ve produced a number of videos documenting their process and how the company came to be. The watches that can be found at Nordstrom and Barney’s are being made by watchmakers who are new to the craft, but many have earned their stripes in the automotive industry. The video clips are short, beautifully produced and provide some insight into what makes the company tick. Images by Shinola
