If you’re a spontaneous traveler, you probably have the mobile booking app HotelTonight downloaded to your iPhone already, but If you haven’t yet you should right away to check out some of the fantastic last minute deals across the major cities and towns across the U.S., Canada, Europe and Mexico.
When I went to London this winter on a press trip I was able to add a couple extra days to the trip and used one to try out the app first hand. Before flying out, I searched the week before and the days leading to my departure to see what my options could be and where I might be staying. Hotels marked ‘Hip’ and ‘Luxe’ (other hotels categories include ‘Basic’, ‘Charming’ and ‘Solid’) ranged from the Heathrow airport area for $100-$150 for hotels such as the Radisson Blu Edwardian Heathrow, the west side near Earls Court for around $200-250 for hotels such as the Belgraves – A Thompson Hotel, and Central London and SoHo for $200-$350 for hotels such as The May Fair.
The morning came the day I wanted to book my stay on HotelTonight, and all the deals in London went live at 9:00 A.M. (which is the same time new deals for the day go live where ever HotelTonight can be used). I looked through for about 15 -20 minutes, and after taking the neighborhood, distance from the tube, hotel category and room, and the rate and savings into consideration (all of which and more was available right on the app to see), I selected the The Marylebone Hotel in the Marylebone district near Oxford Street and Regent Street (fashionista shopping paradise for the mix of fast fashion and luxury brands) since I’ve never had a chance to experience actually staying in the heart of Central London despite being to the city a couple of times before.
The rate for a night in a standard room with a queen sized bed at this hotel that rated four and half stars on Google and TripAdvisor came to $270, which was down about just under 40% the $423 it would’ve cost to book on the hotel’s site directly. The Marylebone Hotel was easy and a short walk to get to from the Bond Street station, and the hotel’s design was chic and modern with several common areas to mingle with other hotel guests.
My favorite amenities during my included the heated bathroom marble floor and luxury Aromatherapy Associates bath products, free WiFi, and access to its high-end three-level gym and health club, the Third Space gym, which included an array of machines and weights, classes, and a pool and spa.
All in all, I enjoyed using the app to easily compare my options with a simple to use location and city search, and an added bonus to when booking on HotelTonight is that the prices and charge are all in U.S currency, so you don’t have to worry about the exchange rate or any international transaction fees. The app also allows you to photo scan your credit card if you so choose when booking.
