How To Style The Classic Loafer

I still remember my first pair of loafers. I was in second grade and my mom was taking me uniform shopping because my parents had enrolled me in private school. Aside from the shirt, tie, and trousers that were part of my uniform, the suggested footwear was a black penny loafer or dress shoe. I’m pretty sure we found my first pair at Sears and I absolutely hated them. As a second-grader there was something inherently uncool about having to wear these “old man” shoes while waiting at the bus stop with all the public school kids. I mean back then I had to wear them, but fast forward to now and I choose to wear them. Let’s just say I’ve fallen in love with this classic style in my adult years. For one they’re super comfortable. Add to that, they’re pretty versatile and can be worn with anything from jeans to slacks and even shorts (just maybe not sweatpants). If I had to create a new “uniform” around my loafers now, this outfit pretty much hits it on the head. I’d style them casually, opting for dark denim (plain or distressed) and a classic top like a polo or oxford button down. The look is a little more preppy than my usual wardrobe leanings, but hey…I guess that private school education taught me at least one thing!
