A Woman’s Advice to Men
It’s safe to say, more likely than not, you’re feeling a little pressure this week. With the infamous holiday that is Valentines Day fast approaching, you’re going to need all of the help you can get. Whether your relationship is long term, long distance or you’re simply interested in making it past the third date - trust us, you don’t want to fuck this up. Here are some foolproof tips to help keep you out of the dog house.
1. Don’t assume ANYTHING.
Is she playing it cool? Maybe she hasn’t even mentioned Valentine’s Day. Don’t assume she couldn’t care less if you treat this like any other day. I hate to say it, but it could be a test. Now, while we don’t condone game-playing here at Dapprly, it’s our job to be honest. A girl might test you. Don’t judge, you guys do it too. I met a bartender the other day (let’s call him Steve) who told me the girl he was seeing had just come to visit him at work the week before. She sat across the bar while he tended to other patrons and was approached by a guy who then ordered her a drink. Long story short, she failed Steve’s test when she drank that shit — but I digress. So, unless she’s Satan’s sister, she will likely appreciate you going the extra mile, especially if it’s unprompted. And whether you realize it or not, you guys earn serious brownie points every time we don’t have to go as far as to write something on your forehead.
2. Be Thoughtful.
You don’t need to break the bank. Be creative. Surprise her. Breakfast in bed is always a win. If your strong point is cooking (even if it’s not), get in the kitchen and make her favorite meal. Write her a note. Send her flowers. Do something! If she’s the right one, it won’t take much.
3. Plan Ahead.
Let me tell you, a girl loves a man with a plan. I’m in a long-distance relationship and my boyfriend just emailed me yesterday with a Word document outlining our entire itinerary for the weekend; I mean, this thing was complete with yelp links and movie showtimes. Sure, he’s an over-achiever by nature, but I can’t tell you how nice it is to not have to deliberate and play the senseless ‘doesn’t-matter-to-me-I’ll-do-whatever’ game, even for a second.
If you choose to dine out, make your dinner reservations well in advance, because there are a hundred other dudes with the same idea to take their girl to Nobu in TriBeCa at 8pm on a Saturday night. I remember my sister once dated a guy who lived a few hours outside of the city and made it a point to come visit her one Valentine’s Day, saying he ‘figured’ they should go to dinner. Though, we’re still not entirely convinced that the timing of his visit wasn’t just a coincidence, because he showed up empty handed with no itinerary. Another long story short - they ended up eating Chinese takeout because every place was booked, and that night he got none.
4. Remember, This Isn’t About You.
This one’s relatively simple: if she wants to see Fifty Shades of Grey, humor her.
5. Enjoy Yourself.
You’re spending time with someone you adore! And let’s face it, you’ll probably get laid. I think that’s worth a smile. Consider your efforts foreplay.
