This weekend I had the pleasure of taking a trip to Prince William County, Virginia as a guest of tourism board there. I’ll be penning a few pieces for a great resource, Travel Mindset and went on several outdoor excursions as well as experiencing the local beer, food and wine scene. My expenses were covered but I was under no obligation to write blog posts about it – I do that because I had a great time and wanted to share my photos and experiences there.

Cock and Bowl restaurant - Occoquan, VA

As you know from the site, I enjoy beer and Manassas is new to the brewery scene, with Bad Wolf Brewing that has only been open for three months. It’s a nanobrewery, which means it’s tiny compared to large brewers and their output is destined for growlers sales in the area. The benefit here is that they’re nimble enough to change their offerings quite often and can put out beers that others wouldn’t touch. I’m not a fan of smoked beers typically as they can be overpowering, but their Grodammit was balanced and delicious. As for Cock and Bowl - yes that’s the name of the restaurant, they have an extensive beer list and typically have some specials on hand. I loved DC Brau‘s version of Belgian pale, The Citizen. I’d love to get a chance to try more of their beers when I return to the area.

The farmer’s markets were impressive, and I was surprised to see that they were offering wine tastings in Old Town Manassas at 11 in the morning on a weekday. The rep from Willowcroft explained a bit about Virginia’s massive wine industry and I had a chance to taste a few – the albariño, a popular varietal in Spain,  being a surprising favorite of mine. The Saturday farmer’s market in Dale City was sprawling and as seen above, numerous tables had tasting stalls where one could try numerous varieties of apples, peaches, pears and more.

The main focus of the trip included outdoor adventures, many of which were new to me – which ranged from BMX riding, bird watching(!) and a kayak and history trip in Historic Occoquan. Look out for subsequent posts here and on Travel Mindset soon.
