How to Choose the Right Cleanser for Your Skin Type

Good skincare is as dependent on product as it is on process. Follow our handy guide to choose the right cleanser for your skin type.

How To: Choose the Right Cleanser for Your Skin Type

Skincare is about as subjective as grooming gets: What makes dry skin clear and radiant, may make oily skin break out, and vice versa. While cleansing once or twice daily with lukewarm water is a great rule of thumb, caring for your complexion is as dependent on product as it is on process. Follow our handy guide to choose the right cleanser for your skin type.

If You Have: Dry Skin

For you, cleansing is tricky: Many soaps further dehydrate the skin and disrupt its natural balance. You’ll need a cleanser that’s just strong enough to be effective without stripping moisture and harboring a dry, flaky environment. Jack Black Deep Dive Glycolic Facial Cleanser exfoliates without the use of irritating artificial beads, instead employing glycolic acid to slough away dead skin. This earthy formula also taps volcanic ash and purifying clay to absorb oil and clear pores. Whenever you wash, follow up with a rich moisturizer.

If You Have: Oily Skin

Maintaining a clear complexion is absolutely possible, but it’s work. Look for an exfoliating cleanser that will dig deep to purify pores—thereby preventing clogging and breakouts—while taming excess oil production. Equal parts lathering cream and gentle scrub, Lab Series Multi-Action Face Wash clears out layers of dead skin cells while breaking down the buildup of oil and grime. This formula is tailor-made for twice-daily use, which oily-skinned guys often prefer.

If You Have: Sensitive Skin

You might be tempted to settle for a humdrum face wash or forego cleansing altogether. Sensitive skin is highly subjective, so be prepared to experiment; in the long run, it’s worth it. Start with DTRT Foam Cleanser Face to Face: its rich, dense lather removes dirt and oil, while leaving your mug hydrated and feeling super soft. Try it a few times a week, and increase from there as needed.

If You Have: Normal Skin

So you have basically trouble-free skin? Congratulations on hitting the jackpot. Opt for a strong-but-balanced formula that tackles dirt and oil while restoring moisturizer and nourishment. Jack Black Pure Clean Daily Facial Cleanser contains oat and coconut derivatives—as well as witch hazel, sage leaf, and rosemary—for a gentle but comprehensive clean. It’s enriched with certified organic chamomile and aloe leaf to reduce redness and calm irritation, making it safe for twice-daily use.

If You Have: No Idea

Like many guys, you may have no clue of your skin type and lack the bandwidth to investigate the issue (though we can help). If that’s the case, choose a simple cleanser that’s engineered for versatility. Baxter of California Daily Face Wash perfectly fits the bill: Featuring straightforward, natural ingredients, it’s colorless, odorless, and—thanks to ginger root extract and aloe vera—it also fights aging and inflammation.
