My gift guide series has hopefully inspired you for some ideas on what to get for friends, family and significant others this holiday, or maybe you even decided to pickup something for yourself. In this edition, backpacks to pick up for all types of traveling from city exploring to beach vacationing from brands such as Herschel Supply, Ben Minkoff, Stone + Cloth and Cotopaxi:
Herschel Supply’s Little America backpack style has been my favorite to use when traveling the past year. It’s the brand’s most popular style, and with good reason. It offers a classic explorer’s backpack style with a modern fabric and features. Each season Herschel rolls out new colors, patterns and combinations, and this black crosshatch with a black front pouch and straps is my favorite for its metropolitan-ready combination of black on black.
A favorite style of mine the past season has clearly been Ben Minkoff’s Bondi Backpack. The twill-cotton style is simply gorgeous and functional—what more could you want for a backpack when traveling to European cities and in luxury?
When I want to check out leather backpack styles I head to Coach right away. A style I use often is no longer available, but from browsing the collection this season the Bleecker Traveler Backpack is a nice sleek update. The colorblocked, mixed leather style features a main compartment with patch pockets and a zippered pocket, and the outer features two large zip compartments to utilize.
For a transitional day-to-day and outdoors backpack, Cotopaxi’s Cusco 26L Backpack is a perfect option. Features a nylon/cotton canvas body with a suede leather bottom panel, adjustable chest, waist and should straps, a breathable padded backpanel and shoulder straps, and several pockets inside and out and big enough to fit a 15″ laptop in. Each Cotopaxi style has its own cause, with each Cusco 26L sold providing an on-site tutor to a child in Cusco, Peru for one week. See how I accessorized the Cusco 26L here.
Stone + Cloth
Another do-gooder brand to keep in mind when shopping for backpacks is Stone + Cloth. Available on Zady, a New York-based e-commerce that curates well-crafted goods for the conscious consumer, Stone + Cloth’s Nautical Stripe Lucas Backpack is made of high-quality canvas that is domestically sourced and would look wonderful during summer and warm-weather travels. Features antique brass hardware and a padded laptop sleeve, proceeds benefit scholarship funds for Tanzanian schoolchildren. Get $25 off at Zady with this link.
A perfect option for the casual tech traveler is the STM Drifter, a lightweight poly backpack that has a pocket for every gadget needed. Along with being able to fit a 15″ laptop and a tablet in its slip pockets, there are three outer pockets, one small see -through pocket and two open side pockets. The back has a foam mesh back panel for comfort, and the backpack can even be securely attached to a handle of a roller luggage
If your travels bring you to cold weather or wet destinations, keep your belongings well secured with Broeas’ Echo backpack. From the brand’s Waterproof Series, the Echo is a versatile 25 liter daypack that will keep your gear dry with its 210D nylon body and interior roll close, waterproof skirt that is sealed with a zipper top-closure. Other features include a reflective print, draining side pockets, and body clasps.
For the style conscious bicyclist, Malle London’s Jonh Tool Bag is a backpack and shoulder bag hybrid that can also be used as a pannier bag that can be attached on bikes and motorcycles. Made of a 18 0z waxed canvas with a leather bottom and straps and brass hardware, it has a aluminum framed top closure designed in the style of classic British doctors bags and U.S. mason bags of the 1950’s.
When you need more space a duffle backpack comes in handy. Filson’s Dry Duffel Backpack offers a cool take on the oversized backpack style with its rugged vinyl body and a fold-over top closure that is secured with a Velcro strap. 24 inches tall and features a single body clasp.
Master-Piece’s Hedge Backpack will turn fellow travelers’ heads with it’s bold use of duck egg blue in a colorblocking scheme with navy and tan. The Japanese luxury accessories brand is available on MR PORTER, and this durable canvas and smooth leather backpack fetures a rolled top that securely closes both with Velcro and hook-fastening tabs.
