If I recall correctly, there was a time when double denim — or rather, head-to-toe denim — was taboo. That’s no longer the case. In fact, I’d even say it’s become passé (see: Katy Perry at the VMAs).
That said, pulling off a double denim look isn’t as simple as adding a denim shirt/jacket to your jeans. You’re up against some harsh statistics, by which I mean you’re almost certainly going to look like the lost fourth stooge.
What’s the trick, then?
If you’re easing yourself into fully fledged fah-shun-ness, mix tones. A deep blue jacket and light-wash bottoms, par exemple. If you’re up for breaking another rule of dressing, bleach your bottoms (cue laughter and/or disgust) and opt for a pair of white jeans.
For the more sartorially adventurous — that includes anyone at fashion week — feel free to not only double up on denim, but double up on washes like yours truly. Break up the denim with a white or grey t-shirt, and the only time you’ll look like a hick is from behind.
