Apparatus Travel - The best places in the world and how to get there in style
You’ll need four-wheel drive to reach Casa Big Sur, but its remoteness is part of the appeal. The 6,500-square-foot five-bedroom home sits on eight acres of verdant hillside, with the rain forest at its back and the vast ocean in front. Monkeys, iguanas and toucans are your only neighbors, and every evening the casa’s open-plan living area is on fire with views of the red- and orange-tinted Pacific.
Inside, the decor is tropics by way of Bali, with lots of bright fabrics and local hardwood detailing. The large common room has a vaulted ceiling with exposed eucalyptus beams and wrought-iron chandeliers.
The stainless-steel and granite kitchen has up-to-date appliances and opens to the relaxed living room with ocean views. Other perks include an outdoor game room, an infinity pool and a Jacuzzi.
Fully retractable wood and glass windows bring the outside in, even in the bathroom, where it’s possible to take a bubble bath in full view of the ocean.
