Why You'll Want to Wear Japanese Denim All Day, Every Day

Inspired by Japanese menswear, Talun Zeitoun takes workwear to the next level with a denim jacket and a striped tee.

Taking an early cue from the fall shows, denim — used and glorified in the most interesting of ways — is making its crisp / distressed / washed / vintage / you-name-it self seen and heard. It never left, of course, but their creative limits (especially for men) are being pushed outside of what’s expected for a pair of jeans or a denim jacket. Walking into Uniqlo, I was originally on a mission to scoop up 3 low-cut pairs of socks, though through the corner of my eye, a sign that read Japanese Denim had me veering a harsh right at the top of the 5th Ave. store’s escalator to an entire section dedicated to just that: Japanese-inspired casual workwear from established Japanese denim mills. And for those who know me, I’m heavily inspired by Japanese menswear fashion, so to see a wall — especially one that’s affordable — comprised of high quality (yes!) denim-inspired fabrics galore won over my original intent to simply up my sock game and not terribly downsize my wallet.

When it comes to work attire, I’m fortunate enough to say that I don’t have to be bogged down in a suit all day and, even amongst many clients, casual, but nice workwear is appreciated to mesh with their environment (I normally work with creative-types). So a denim jacket with qualities of a blazer, rolled up pleated trousers, a striped tee, and clean white sneakers adds a freshness to the look, especially for late spring (here was my early fall inspired casual work attire last year) that keep me inspired and above all comfortable in-office or during downtown subway rides between meetings.
